Who it’s for

Who it’s for.

Clarence is for the person who keeps meaning to text people back and doesn’t. You have a few friendships that went quiet, people you’d hate to lose by accident, and you spend your day at a Mac. If that’s you, here’s the honest version, including where Clarence isn’t the answer.

You, if a few of these land

  • There are names you think of with a small pang. People you love and haven’t texted in months, for no real reason.
  • Your history with them is real. Years of threads, the inside jokes, all of it. It went quiet, and nobody decided it should.
  • You do most of your typing at a keyboard. Messages is open, or could be, right next to your work.
  • You’ve tried the reminder apps. One told you to text Sam, you snoozed it, and you felt slightly worse about Sam.
  • You don’t want another dashboard to keep updated. You want the friendship, not the admin.

Why it’s a Mac app, and who that rules out

Your iPhone keeps your message history sealed off from other apps. A phone app can nag you to text someone, but it can never see whether you did, or how the two of you actually talk. The Mac is different. Your history lives in a local file on the machine, and you can let an app you trust read it. That one fact is the only reason Clarence can notice drift and draft in your voice. (If you want the workflow for keeping up from a Mac, start here.)

So here’s the honest part. If you do all your texting on your phone and rarely open your Mac, Clarence won’t fit your life. I’d rather say that now than take your money. It has to sit where your messages already live.

Who it isn’t for

  • People who want an app to text their friends for them. Clarence writes the draft. You edit it, and you press send, every time. If you want it fully automated, it will frustrate you, and it should.
  • People who want a contact database. Clarence isn’t a place to file your friends like leads. If what you want is a tidy spreadsheet of everyone you know, that’s a personal CRM, and it’s a different, more tedious thing.
  • Anyone who wants their friendships gamified. No streaks, no scores, no red badge counting the people you’re behind on. If guilt is what gets you to act, Clarence is the wrong shape.

If that’s you

Then it’s built for your exact problem. The friends you keep meaning to reach, and the blank first line that keeps stopping you. Clarence notices who’s drifting and hands you a message that’s already started, in the way you and that person actually talk. You can see exactly how it treats your messages before you trust it: how Clarence treats your messages. The longer argument for why I’m building it at all is in the manifesto.

Be there when it opens

Clarence is being built in the open, for the Mac, right now. Leave your email and you’ll hear from us twice: once when the beta opens, once when it ships. Nothing else.
